The rocking horse had lived in the nursery longer than any of the other toys. He was wise and knew the mechanical toys were only toys and would never turn into anything else, because nursery magic is very strange and wonderful.

The Velveteen Rabbit wanted to know what it meant to be real. The rocking horse told him that it's a thing that happens to you when a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but really loves you. Then you become real.

The Velveteen Rabbit slept in the Boy's bed, for many nights and the Boy hugged him very tight.

The Boy would talk to the Velveteen Rabbit, and they played all kinds of games together.

Time went on and the Velveteen Rabbit was very happy, so happy that he didn't notice how his fur was getting shabby and his tail was coming off, and the pink of his nose had been rubbed off.

One day the little boy took the Velveteen Rabbit to play in the woods. The Velveteen Rabbit saw two rabbits hopping about. They looked brand new, and their seams didn't show.
