This is just another ending, and an appropriate time for nostalgia, not panic.

Panic is what your body feels when vital functions are threatened. Your body, like a Secret Service agent, is supposed to keep your soul safe here in this space and time--no matter what--and it will die trying.

Nostalgia, on the other hand, is one of the things our souls came here to experience because 'here' is a rare place. Here are the dimensions of space and time, and here our souls are able to experience things they normally can't. Our souls are not native to beginnings or endings; they learn them here. We learn.

I take this place for granted way too much. I stride impatiently through this rare experience avoiding awareness, seeking always to get on with it, to go elsewhere, as if I was brought here against my will. As if I am not exactly where I am supposed to be, as if there were any other place besides here and now.

Your kids are crying, their dirty laundry stinks, and the house is a mess.. this is exactly the right moment.

At least once, when I was riding my bike through torrential rain, with cold water trickling down the crack of my ass, and cars emptying every muddy pothole onto me, I was able to say, and mean it, 'Someday I will miss this.' That's when I was happiest.

I'm not looking for rain, or muddy potholes. I am looking to maintain, if I can, the realization that someday I will miss this, no matter what 'this' happens to be.

We could choose to believe that we will get all these moments back at the end, when our souls re-enter timelessness. We could make the case that at the end we will be able to revisit our childhoods, our virginity, our adolescent tragedies and our very best moments, like visiting a library. But I don't think so. These unique moments, once lived, are gone forever, and that makes this place in which we live them precious. That is why our world is surrounded by so many benevolent spirits outside of time, who gather near us to support our unimaginably valuable experience here, in this place and time.
