well, there. I just spent 6 hours uninstalling HomeSite (both 4.0 and 4.5) including every single reference left over in the Window's Registry. Then I did a 'clean' reinstall of 4.0 (I'm considering also reinstalling it's first upgrade to 4.01—but never again 4.5!)
I just don't want to go into all the little bugs and absurdities built in to every version of HomeSite I have used. However, I do have to say that it is the editor I have used, almost exclusively, for the past year. It does the basic stuff pretty well; it's the little built-in bugs that really annoy. And with version 4.5 they have really excelled in the fucking-up: The FTP 'improvements' of 4.5 (and 4.5a—I even tried that) render HomeSite's FTP features useless, while increasing the executable size three-fold. And it has the most infuriating and anti-intutive interface I have ever encountered.
Here is one example (and it may take me ten pages to explain it); snippets. These are the little strings of text that we get sick of retyping a hundred times a day, like frequently used URL's and HTML formatting code. So, like any good text-based HTML editor, HomeSite provides a means of saving little strings of text—called snippets—for later retrieval and insertion into documents like this. Some marketing boob must have told HomeSite developers that requiring lots of mouse actions will make the application appear sophisticated. The miracle here is that marketing people succeed in life, and developers actually listen to them. Mouse actions in a text-based HTML editor are stupid, but HomeSite requires them to create, edit, and insert snippets. Many times I have just typed the goddamn text rather than try to extract it via HomeSite's mouse-mania.
And even with this pristine reinstall, HomeSite is still producing bugs; I just can't tell if they will be fixed, or made worse by the 4.01 upgrade. The most annoying thing is that HomeSite comes tantalizingly close to being a great text-HTML editor, but then drops the ball. <sigh>
