The 21st century. Wasn't that a movie in elementary school? It was also a TV show in the 60's--a long time ago.
If I ever thought I'd hear myself refer to a point within the span of my own life as, 'a long time ago,' I certainly never thought it would feel like this. I reach back to the 20th century--or even just back into the nines, or only back as far as last week--with fondness. But that fondness has an urgency, as though the past were the air I gasp for, like a weary swimmer choking midway in this deep crossing.
Maybe it's not so long ago. Today is really only two days more than New Year's eve. But all those zeros in the date serve to focus more clearly for me now the distance of the past, and way back then, two days ago, I hadn't noticed how very long ago 'long ago' had become.
