{"id":23,"date":"2007-02-21T19:23:20","date_gmt":"2007-02-22T00:23:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/burgwinkel.com\/blog\/?p=23"},"modified":"2007-02-21T19:23:20","modified_gmt":"2007-02-22T00:23:20","slug":"philip-glass","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/burgwinkel.com\/blog\/?p=23","title":{"rendered":"Philip Glass"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Do all these Philip Glass movie sound tracks sound the same?  <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Hours_(movie)\">The Hours<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kundun\">Kundun<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Koyaanisqatsi\">Koyaanisqatsi<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\nI just watched Kundun, and I kept expecting to see Virginia Woolf appear.  I felt the same way when I listened to parts of the soundtrack from the Qatsi trilogy.  <\/p>\n<p>\nIs it enough just to be famous, to be allowed to rework a tired old tune and call it new, or is there some sensibility I am missing here?  Maybe Philip deserves renown for something, but it certainly is not for duplicating the inspiration he had for whichever of those films came first.  <\/p>\n<p>\nOr maybe none of these are the original inspiration, maybe all of these (and perhaps even more) are variations of some preceding theme.  <\/p>\n<p>\nI loved the soundtrack for The Hours.  I guess that means I liked the soundtracks for Kundun and Koyaanisqatsi, too.<\/p>\n<p>\nI&#8217;m in a bad mood.  Maybe it&#8217;s syphilitic encephalitis that&#8217;s making me cranky.
